Two Research Sources

Two Research Sources

Q You are to find TWO research sources for your topic for your Research Essay. You may choose ONE topic from the three choices below. Note: Your two sources and Annotated Bibliography cannot include texts and materials already listed in our modules, including reading texts. Research entails your FINDING sources beyond what is provided for the student. Please indicate WHICH topic you've chosen: #1, #2, or #3: STEPS TO FINDING YOUR RESEARCH SOURCES: --In your choice of topic and looking for your research sources, first choose your topic from #1, #2, or #3. For Topic #1: You may choose any writer whose text we've read. For example, you may be interested in Henrik Ibsen. Your task is to note for yourself what you can most relate to in the writing of this author. Maybe you find the character Nora of interest. She might bring to mind the domestic roles in a family. Or, you might find an observation in E.T. Hamann's essay "The Latino Diaspora" of particular interest to you. Come up with a tentative thesis that will allow you to do some research on the topic you've thus chosen. Tentative thesis: Nora's growth as a submissive, compliant wife in her relationship with Helmer provides a pattern for strong women who must negotiate their identity as wife and mother. For Topic #2: You may do a biographical study of a writer you can most relate to. For example, you may like Octavio Paz, Lin Yutang, Henrik Ibsen, Kate Chopin, or another from our readings. You CANNOT download and merely give biographical details. Just what do you relate to most? What you choose to relate to must relate to some issue in their culture or in our contemporary culture. From there, you follow the structure given above of an argumentative essay. The main thing is to present somethings not commonly known of this writer and of the issue. What new "take" can you give to the discussion of the author or issue? Example: You choose Henrik Ibsen. You might be interested in his experience of bankruptcy and how that might relate to his depiction of Krogstad and Mrs. Linde and even of Helmer who would be threatened with loss of job and position as a banker. So, the harsh economic realities facing these characters and the way they then had to lead their lives (Be particular with details from the play as these relate to bankruptcy and even Krogstad's blackmail of Nora...). How does Ibsen's personal biographical detail(s) relate to the play itself. You may choose any writer whose text we've read. Tentative thesis: Nora's growth as a submissive, compliant wife in her relationship with Helmer provides a pattern for strong women who must negotiate their identity as wife and mother For Topic #3: Or, you may choose a topic not directly centered on an author. You'd rather work with a topic you yourself found interesting in the text or texts read during our weeks of study. For example, you are interested in particular in the pattern of material success of immigrants within a people group as presented in one of our resources in Week 4 (Swedish, Chinese, Latino and other in videos). No repeat of what you've written about in Week 4 regarding "National Transmigration". Please be sure to relate in particulars to source(s) with the research you've found. Avoid downloading blocs of information on your topic. Select research information that relates to contentions and essay content and your opinion of both her text and what you've discovered in your research. For topic #3, you may get interviews with persons who can tell you about their own experiences. Note: Please do not repeat what you've already written about in Essays 1,2 or Midterm. FORMAT FOR THE ASSIGNMENT: 1. THE TOPIC I HAVE CHOSEN IS: #1 #2 #3 (Circle your choice) 2. List your TWO researches in MLA Works Cited Format. Suggestion: Go to Knight Cite, link given in our Modules, give that site the information on your source, Knight Cite will send back Works Cited for your source. **Use these two sources for your Annotated Bibliography for this week, Week 6. In some instances, characters in plays or novels undergo several changes to discover their true self and eliminate the deceitful perception that people have of them. The growth is commonly known as self-awareness and self-expression. The ability to break free and live an authentic life to oneself is one goal that most people desire but due to competing needs, the choice to authentically express one’s opinions, thoughts, and desires becomes secondary to pleasing others. When striving to please others, it becomes easy to follow a fraudulent path. Whenever a change is made, the character realizes the significance of their life and acknowledges the hypocritical life they have led. Henrik Ibsen’s starting chapters in A Doll House, reveals Nora as a character who is childish and a spendthrift even as a housewife.
